Atlantic Junior Secondary School recently received a donation consisting of sanitary pads, books and other necessities.
A total of 45 grade 10 girls at the school received sanitary pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes, face cloths, soap, a pencil case with pens, an A4 book and a chocolate. In addition the Life Skills teacher received a ‘Plan B’ bag with extra items, should the learners require them in the future.
The donation was made by the FNB Swakopmund Branch with the help of the FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust and the Rainbow Hearts. A team from the bank handed over the items and they will regularly return to refill the ‘Plan B’ bag.
They also brought in clinical psychologist, Nikki Meiring to educate the girls about the life pie chart. She spoke on various ways the female learners can effectively divide their time between health, family, finance, education and their social life.
Swakompmund branch manager, Mare Steenkamp said that education and quality of life should not be hampered by the lack of basic necessities.
“We all know that it’s not a conducive environment if you have to go to school and not have the basics or are unable to attend school for a week because of your monthly cycle. We hope that we can make a difference in the lives of the girl child so that they can attend school in dignity,” Mare said.
